June Week 2 | Help your gymnasts find a positive mindset.
When we think specific thoughts, we build a “roadway” in our brain. And it can become impossible to see that there are other possible “roads” we could take instead. This week Ali and Stacie talk about a gymnastics mindset training tool that helps your gymnasts explore other possible things they could be thinking instead. This will help them when they are struggling with upgrades, negative thinking, mental blocks, performance anxiety and so much more. June Week 1 | Help your gymnasts figure out their thoughts.
Have you ever tried to help your gymnasts with their mindset, asked them what they are thinking, only to have them honestly not know. It’s hard to help them understand and change their negative thoughts when they don’t even know what they are. Gymnasts often think back on what they did in practice, on the last event, on their last turn, and criticize it. And when they try to look at their thoughts to understand what is going on with their skills, they do the same. This is a problem because our brains hate to be criticized. And so it will actually hide our thoughts from us if it is afraid we are going to judge ourselves harshly. This means when your gymnast tries to figure out what she was thinking so that she can change it to something more useful, she won’t be able to see it. This week, we teach our gymnasts a mindset training activity that helps gymnasts learn to observe their thoughts in a way that helps them. Tune in! #36 Conversations for Coaches | Teach your gymnasts how to let go of their disappointment.
When your gymnast is frustrated with how things have gone in the past, they can fall victim to overgeneralizing one or two mistakes as a complete character flaw. A few falls in a meet season become “I can’t compete well.” Difficulty on a skill turns into “I am just bad at that event.” In this episode, Ali and Stacie talk about how to help your gymnasts look at the facts of the last season and determine how they want to think about it going forward in a way that will help them be successful in the coming year.
In this episode:
-Focusing on the facts of the past season
-Looking forward to the upcoming season

#34 Conversations for Coaches | How to turn pressure into motivation.
If you really think about it, getting up and saluting that judge can be a very heavy feeling for some gymnasts. It’s particularly hard for those athletes who struggle with pressure. You know, the ones who “have to” hit this routine for one reason or another.
“I have to stick this beam routine or, (insert unlikely consequence here).”
In this episode:
Turning the “have to’s” in to “WANT TO’s”
Shifting an athletes’ inner dialogue from “have to” to “want to” is an extremely powerful tool. All of a sudden, “I have to stick this beam routine” becomes “I want to stick this beam routine,” and the load immediately feels lighter. “Have to” implies pressure while “want to” implies motivation. # 33 Conversations for Coaches | Are your gymnasts nervous? Here’s how to help them.
Did you know that the physical phenomenon of feeling nervous and feeling excited are almost exactly the same? The body has a hard time distinguishing between the two emotions. It’s the brain that determines which emotion your gymnast is going to experience based on the thoughts that she is having.
In this episode:
-Understanding the NOW process
-Shifting nerves to excitement
-Breathing strategies to help calm nerves
Being able to identify emotions and how they are existing within our bodies can really help us process what we’re going through. Some gymnasts get butterflies when they are nervous and also experience butterflies when they are excited. Teaching our gymnasts how to create positive thought patterns around these feelings can help them to shift negative emotions into positive ones.
